SALINA LAUREN DESIGNS
Narrative Studies Corset
This corset was inspired by the narrative The Yellow Wallpaper - a story revealing the struggle of women's mental health in the 19th Century. At that time, many women, especially postpartum experienced mental health struggles. These women were often not taken seriously and quickly labeled hysterical or insane and prescribed to solitary confinement in the home. As the story eludes, this confinement only worsened their condition. My project is a representation of this. I chose to create a corset because it represents the pressures put on women to fit the mold of how men in society thought they should look and behave. I chose a fabric with a feminine and delicate exterior and added hidden steel boning within, representing the prison that the woman in the story experienced by being isolated from the rest of the world during postpartum mental health struggles.
